GPS - Magellan VS Garmin

Cuando me propuse viajar en moto por África se me planteó el problema del GPS, como todos sabemos existen de muchos tipos, formas y marcas. El conocido punto a punto en África no iba a funcionar, o mejor dicho, solo podría llegar a funcionar en las carreteras principales y alguna ciudad cartografiada, entonces, ¿que pasaría si me metía en una pista, en un camino o en la playa? Pues que esa misión se produciría sin ningún tipo de referencia. ¿Perdido por África? No suena bien.


When I decided to travel by motorcycle to Africa, I asked myself about the problem of the GPS. Like we all know there is count less brands. The well know point to point in africa wouldnt work, or would only be usefull in main roads and some cities, then: ¿What would happen if I went on the tracks, beach, sand roads, etc? That mision would happen without no reference ? Lost in africa? That does not sound well !!! 

Para solucionar ese aspecto tenía que ir a morir a un GPS de rumbo que permitiera introducir tracks, rutas y/o waypoints. Y en esa parcela Magellan y Garmin se llevan la palma en el mercado del GPS. Después de estudiar muchos los modelos y sus prestaciones llegué a la conclusión de que Magellan está por encima de Garmin, si bien, Garmin goza de una política de ventas y marketing que supera a la de Magellan.

To resolve that aspect I had to go for a GPS that permited to introduce tracks, points, waypoints, and in that case Magellan and Garmin are the best. After studing a lot of models my conclusion was that Magellan is above Garmin, but what Garmin is more sold because better marketing. 

¿El mismo GPS con distintas marcas? Posiblemente si. De hecho ambos aparatos utilizan el chipset SirfStartIII fabricado por una firma californiana llamada Sirf Tecnology, aunque en los últimos meses, Garmin está introduciendo un nuevo chipset, el MTK de la marca MediaTEK, de una marca Tailandesa.

¿The same GPS with diferent makes ? Yes its posible. In fact the two of them use the chipset SirfStartIII fabricated by a California sign named Sirf Tecnology. In the last months Garmin is introducing a new chipset, the MTK of the sign MediaTEK, a sign from Tailand.

Y es que en el chipset y en la pantalla recae todo el peso de la autonomía de estos GPS, si mejoramos esos aspectos el GPS consumirá menos y por ente la batería durará más, aunque al parecer, el SirfStartIII sigue siendo más preciso que el MTK, Garmin apuesta por mejorar la autonomía y sacrificar la precisión mientras que Magellan sigue fiel a la función real de un GPS, la precisión.

In the chipset and on the screen falls the autonomy of these GPS, if we improved theses aspects the GPS battery will last longer, but the SirfstartIII is still more exact than the MTK. Garmin prefeers the autonomy hem the precision and Magellan prefeers the precision of a real GPS.

En cuanto a GPS de manos se refiere Magellan siempre fue por delante de Garmin pues fueron los primeros en utilizar la tecnología GPSr con el ejército Canadiense, una tecnología basada en la navegación naval aplicada a cartografía en tierra. Hace años Garmin podía tener cierta ventaja con el tema de la cartografía, pero hoy en día, esta está al alcance de ambas marcas, quienes montan de serie y en la gama alta los mismos mapas bases.

When we talk about hand GPS, Magellan was always in front of Garmin. Magellan were the first to use the GPS tecnology with the Canadiense Army, based in the navigation applied on hearth. Years ago Garmin could be better but now in high quality GPS there is no advantages.

Entonces y a mi modo de ver, para poder analizar los pros y los contras de ambas marcas deberíamos profundizar en la calidad de los materiales usados. Carcasas, componentes, pantallas. Sobre ese aspecto solo puedo decir que teniendo en las manos dos unidades, el Magellan Xplorist 710 y el Garmin Oregon o Montana, todos, presentan una calidad y robustez similar, pecando el Magellan de algo más de peso, algo que en moto y sobre soporte poco importa.

Then in my way of thinking to be able to analize the best and worse things of the two of hem we should see the quality of the components they are made with. After having the two of hem in my hands, the two, are very similar, and I could only say that the Magellan is a bit more heavy.
 

Otro aspecto no menos importante es el software o la interface que utilizan ambas marcas. Y en ese sentido y una vez más el Magellan se lleva el gato al agua ya que actualmente monta un sistema parecido a Windows con accesos rápidos en las esquinas de la pantalla y alguno de los botones, acciones, que Garmin no tiene, y que al parecer, se esmeran en copiar a Magellan para mejorar e igualar sus productos.

Another aspect not less important is the software or the interface that the two makes use, and in that case Magellan is better because it uses a software similar to windows with quick acces in the corner of the screen and some of the buttons, actions that Garmin don't have and try to copy Magellan to equalize their products. 
 

A nivel de soporte técnico y mediante las webs respectivas tendremos todas las actualizaciones que necesitemos, en cuanto a reparaciones, parece ser que Garmin reparara las unidades mientras que Magellan prefiere substituirla siempre que estemos en garantía. Una vez finalizada la garantía, la reparación del Magellan podría sernos algo más costosa en tiempo, aunque sinceramente, estos aparatos o fallan el primer día o duran para toda la vida, o al menos, hasta que le demos cambiazo por una nueva unidad.

At a tecnic support level via the web's we will have the updates needed. With the repairs needed, Garmin does hem but Magellan changes them for another one always in garantee. Once the garantee end the Magellan repairs will he more expensive, but these GPS go wrong the first day or they can all our lives, or until we change them.

Tampoco hay que olvidar el vital aspecto de la relación calidad precio, y en ese sentido os voy a dejar a vosotros el análisis y la elección. A igualdad de prestaciones un GPS de gama alta como el que yo voy a utilizar, el Magellan Xplorist 710 Europe os puede costar alrededor de 400 euros de media, mientras que el Garmin Oregon o Montana os costará de 430 euros el primero a 579 euros el segundo.

We should not forget the vital aspect of value for money and in that aspect I will let you the analisi and choice. At equal benefits to a GPS like the one I will use "high-end", the Magellan Xplorist 710 Europe can cost you around 400€, and the Garmin Oregon or Montana will cost between 430€ and 579€ respectively.
